THREEPENNY MAGIC SHOW SET FOR JUNE 9

May 24, 2007. Professor Miller and Dr. Wilson will celebrate the return of magic to Mount Desert Island at noon on Saturday, June 9, with an old-fashioned magic show on a most unusual stage: the ocean floor. The Threepenny Magic Show will take place at low tide on the sand bar between Bar Harbor and Bar Island. The show is a fundraiser for the Town Hill Playground being planned by the West Eden Village Improvement Society, with audience members being asked to donate at least three cents to the penny drive. The pennies will be used in the attempt to break the current Guinness Book of World Records time for laying a mile of pennies, scheduled for September 9 at The Jackson Laboratory. Donations in excess of three cents will also be accepted.

Miller and Wilson are no strangers to the sand bar in Frenchman Bay. Last year, the two were joined on the sand bar by a crew of three other magicians for The Perilous Garden, in which Dr. Wilson walked barefoot and blindfolded through a path of bone-crushing animal traps. In 2004, Dr. Wilson staged Against the Tide, in which he was chained to the ocean floor with borrowed padlocks as the tide came in. He escaped.

The Threepenny Magic Show marks a substantial change in tone from these earlier performances, with no fire, chains, or animal traps being used. Instead, Miller and Wilson seek a greater challenge: raising funds for the Town Hill Playground fund using magic. "Eating fire, escaping from chains, and avoiding animal traps is easy for us," Dr. Wilson explains. "It's much harder raising money to build a playground."

Miller and Wilson also hope to interest the audience in their Theater of Marvels, which will return to Otter Creek Hall for Bar Harbor's Legacy of the Arts Festival on June 23 and every Saturday night in July and August. They will also be performing in the All-Star Magical Revue at the Criterion Theatre on July 4, along with a star-studded cast of magicians, clowns, gymnasts, belly dancers, and the featured sideshow attraction, The Incredible Gill-Man.

THREEPENNY MAGIC SHOW SET FOR JUNE 9

May 31, 2007. At low tide in Frenchman Bay, a sand bar appears between Bar Harbor and Bar Island as if by magic. Enchanted by this performance space, Professor Miller and Dr. Wilson will present the Threepenny Magic Show on the sand bar at noon on Saturday, June 9.

Miller and Wilson are familiar with the magic of water and sand. For their Theater of Marvels show, returning this summer to Otter Creek Hall, Miller and Wilson researched a feat of magic from India using sand and water. Professor Miller's presentation is adapted from a description found in a nineteenth-century book of magic that gives a Westerner's account of the performance of a Jadoowar (magic worker) from India. Professor Miller recently had the honor of explaining the feat via email to a magician in India. "You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been," Miller added.

INCREDIBLE GILL-MAN TO PERFORM ON JULY 4

June 14, 2007. The Incredible Gill-Man will join magicians, clowns, belly dancers, gymnasts and sideshow performers for the All-Star Magical Revue at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor, Maine, on July 4 at 2:30 pm. The Incredible Gill-Man is the featured attraction this year in a variety show bursting with talent. Ring 362 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians asked The Incredible Gill-Man to travel from his home near Allentown, PA, to perform in the show after one of its members saw his performance at a gathering of sideshow performers last September.

Unlike the magicians, The Incredible Gill-Man has only one trick, but it's a good one: he breathes under water! That, and his appearance, make for a performance that people will remember for the rest of their lives.

Getting The Incredible Gill-Man to perform on the stage of the Criterion Theatre proved to be a challenge. The group carefully investigated the ability of the stage to bear the weight of the quantity of water required. After clearing the act with Rob Jordan of the Criterion Theatre and reviewing safety procedures with the Fire Chief, the only remaining issue was compensation. Prohibited by its policies as a nonprofit to pay performers, the group instead made The Incredible Gill-Man an offer he couldn't refuse: a giant sideshow banner depicting his act. The banner, painted by local artist Paul Szauter, will join three other sideshow banners to set the stage for the show.

Admission to the All-Star Magical Revue is $8 for adults and $5 for persons twelve years of age and under. The proceeds benefit two nonprofit organizations, Ring 362 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Criterion Theatre and Arts Center. Tickets are available in advance from the Criterion Theatre box office.

June 21, 2007. The All-Star Magical Revue will return with an all-star cast to the stage of the Criterion Theatre on July 4 at 2:30 pm. The show is presented by Ring 362 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, a nonprofit group for the promotion of the magical arts based in Bangor. This year's cast features bellydance by The Wicked Stepsisters, rhythmic gymnastics by The Shooting Stars, and a spectacular closing performance by The Incredible Gill-Man, who breathes under water.

There is no shortage of magicians, either. Kaitlyn Grassette of Rumford (Maine's Capital of Magic) will appear as The Torture Queen, putting The Invulnerable Man to the test. Her father, Scot Grassette, will juggle and perform magic with Mr. Amazing. Danny Baker, Maine's Funniest Magician, will delight the younger audience with his unique comedy magic. Professor Miller will summon a snowstorm on stage before performing his signature work, the Chinese Rings. Dr. Wilson will follow in the footsteps of Houdini by escaping from a straitjacket and chains.

People arriving early for the show can enjoy the clowning of Admiral the Clown (Kim Hawkins), a graduate of Ringling Clown College who will be teaching magic this year for the Summer Festival of the Arts. Those who really can't wait for the show to start can see Kevin Roberge, Dr. Wilson, and Admiral the Clown performing at the Rotary Pancake Breakfast beginning at 6:00 am.

Admission to the All-Star Magical Revue is $8 for adults and $5 for persons twelve years of age and under. The proceeds benefit two nonprofit organizations, Ring 362 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Criterion Theatre and Arts Center.
