Ring Report May 21, 2006
Minutes for this meeting.
The May meeting of I.B.M. Ring 362 was held at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center in Newport, Maine, on May 21 at 3:00 pm.
The theme of the meeting was Silk Magic.
Danny Baker performed a smart manipulation act to music, turning canes to silks and back again, producing and vanishing silks,
changing the color of a wand, and manipulating billiard balls. As he produced silks, billiard balls, and other objects, he tossed
them into a box on a nearby table. When the act was over, he took apart the box and table to reveal that everything had vanished again.
Conjuring Carroll performed Gospel Magic in silk, changing one picture silk into another to end with a big finish. Alan Drew, dressed
in his usual dapper style complete with a pocket handkerchief, had a card selected and returned to the deck. He caused the card to vanish,
then removed it from his breast pocket, only to discover that it was blank. He shook out his handkerchief to reveal the image of the card on the handkerchief.
Brother Don showed us a beautiful silk untying effect from the Rice Encyclopedia, then presented a coded prediction based on the
Da Vinci code. To the sound of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, he wrote a prediction openly in code, then offered a couple of
Dan Brown's books to a participant. A page was selected at random, and the first words on the page noted while another
volunteer translated the prediction, which proved to be correct. Dayton Salisbury told a
story of birds, a clever turtle, and a trickster raven, accompanied by a flurry of colorful silks.
Dr. Wilson broke from the theme to escape from a strait jacket and chains, while Wes Booth demonstrated his ability to find
a card by reading a volunteer's pulse.
The business meeting was held following the performances. Ring members discussed planning for the Ring's first public fund-raising show,
the All-Star Magical Revue, to be held at the historic Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor on the Fourth of July. Congratulations were offered at the meeting to
Dennis Labbe, for winning the Ralph Greenwood Comedy Contest in Portland; Wes Booth, for getting newspaper coverage of his victory in the Elliott Card Challenge
at the April Ring meeting; and to Angelique and Markus Steelgrave for their upcoming wedding on June 10. Further details of the
business meeting and upcoming events are available at the Ring's website (www.ibmring362.org).
