Ring Report
June 18, 2006

Minutes for this meeting.

The June Meeting for I.B.M. Ring 362 was scheduled to be held at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center (SVCC) in Newport on June 18, 2006 at 2:30 pm. Members found the Sebasticook Valley Community Center locked, and were unable to locate any SVCC board members to get it unlocked. The meeting relocated to the Friar's Bakehouse, 21 Central Street in Bangor, where Brother Don Paul offered not only great hospitality, but cool refreshments as well. Wes Booth surprised everyone by ordering pizza to compensate for the inconvenience of the relocation.

The scheduled Coin Magic teaching table was canceled, and magical performances were postponed until after the business meeting. The meeting was chaired by Alan Drew. Alan made a motion to use informal rules of order. Although these have not yet been clearly defined, the motion passed and the meeting proceeded.

Members discussed the Ring's upcoming public fundraising show, the All-Star Magical Revue, to be held at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor on July 4. Two rehearsals are scheduled at the SVCC prior to the show. Performers will include Dr. Wilson, Professor Miller, Wes Booth, Alan Drew and Eostara Dancers. We will also have a cast of on-stage technicians who will take an active role in making the show happen. Members also discussed the public show at the SVCC in September to compensate them for the use of the facility. It was decided to talk to the management at SVCC to clarify our arrangement and assure that we can have access at all agreed times. This will assure that meetings can be held as scheduled and that we get adequate rehearsal time for the fundraising shows.

Once the meeting concluded, it was on to the magic. The theme for the magical performances was Coin Magic. Danny Baker performed a coin matrix routine on the lawn outside the SVCC before the members relocated. He also passed out samples of his original routine called "Nickel Pickle" to all who wanted one. Professor Miller performed a David Roth routine called The Planet, which is a series of color changes with coins ending in an unbelievable transposition. He then demonstrated Coins Across as performed by David Roth but using a clear glass instead of a coffee mug. He noted that using a clear glass takes away the comfortable notion that the container is gaffed, making it a stronger effect. Brother Don demonstrated his version of Coins Across using a clear, long-stemmed wine glass.

With the coin work concluded, it was on to non-themed magic. Wes Booth contributed some card effects. The first of these involved a novel use of the classic Magician's Force and ended with a chosen card face up in an otherwise face-down pack. Not only that, but the chosen card had a back of a different color than the rest. Other effects and forces were demonstrated as well. Chris Florey also performed some card effects.

The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m. and, although everyone wanted to stay and talk magic, it was Father's Day. Family obligations beckoned, so everyone headed for home.
