Dai Vernon Night
![]() Our February meeting will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2008, at 3:00 pm at the Friars' Bakehouse in Bangor, Maine. Here are directions to the Friars' Bakehouse. Our theme is Dai Vernon Night. Dai Vernon (1894 - 1992), affectionately known as "The Professor," was a tremendously skilled sleight of hand artist who had a profound impact on the direction of close-up magic in the 20th century. Vernon brought techniques from the world of card cheats to the performance of card effects, replacing broad misdirection with subtlety. His routine for the Cups and Balls is credited with the current popularity of this effect. His six-ring "Symphony of the Rings" routine is the basis for many current routines with the Linking Rings. Ring members will likely be able to trace the roots of much of their current repertoire to Dai Vernon. Members are encouraged to discover Vernon's influence on their own work, and to acknowledge that influence in performance.
Prior to the performances, there will be a raffle of a Jay Marshal Commemorative Coin. Following the performances, there will be a Teaching Table on Coin Box Magic by Professor Miller. We will hold our business meeting following the Teaching Table. Please see the agenda for this meeting. |
