On the Centennial of its formation in 2002, the Society of American Magicians stuck a commemorative coin bearing the likeness of the then-current Dean, Jay Marshall, the eighth Dean of the S.A.M. Jay Marshall had a distinguished career in magic, having appeared on the Ed Sullivan show fourteen times. He was famous for his minimalist hand puppet, "Lefty."
"He was the primary source on so many things," Teller of Penn & Teller said, calling Mr. Marshall "the British Library and the Library of Congress combined" in matters magical. He died in 2005.
Prior to the performances at the February 2008 meeting, a raffle will be held for the Jay Marshall Commemorative Coin. The coin is gold-colored and is about the size of a silver dollar. Members and guests were permitted to purchase as many tickets as they liked at $1 each, 6 for $5, or 13 for $10. Bryan-Keith Taylor won the raffle, which raised $31 for the Ring's Lecture Endowment.
