Election of 2007 Ring Officers

The election of Ring Officers was held at the January 2007 Ring meeting, with prior balloting by mail. Four offices were uncontested, and those offices were be filled without balloting:

  • Vice President - Carroll Chapman
  • Secretary - Paul Szauter
  • Treasurer - Randy Von Smith
  • Sergeant At Arms - Geoffrey Miller

The office of President was contested and was filled by election at the January 2007 Ring meeting:

  • President - Danny Baker, Wes Booth

A balloting procedure was approved by the 2006 officers and candidates. Ballots were mailed to all members together with a return envelope and a small coin envelope. Members voting by mail marked their ballots, sealed them in the coin envelope, then sealed the coin envelope in the return envelope. They signed the return envelope across the flap, and returned it by mail to the Secretary. At the January meeting, members had the option of voting in person. A member wishing to vote in person who had previously mailed in a vote would have their mailed-in ballot destroyed. The Treasurer verified that each person intending to vote had paid their membership dues for 2007. Only members who had paid their dues can vote. As the Treasurer verified the membership status of each mailed-in ballot, the outer envelope was opened and the coin envelope mixed with those from in-person voting. This procedure ensured that only qualified members could vote, and also ensured that voting was by secret ballot.

The 2007 Ballot Committee consisted of Paul Szauter, Randy Von Smith, and Dayton Salisbury.

Following approval by the current officers and candidates, this procedure was outlined to members at the October Ring meeting. Please see the Minutes for the October 2006 and November 2006 meetings.

You can see the election results here. Votes were counted on January 21, 2007.

Candidate Statements

Candidates for elective office were given an opportunity to summarize their qualifications for office, and to make a statement of up to 300 words on their vision for the future of Ring 362. Their responses appear below.

Danny Adrian Baker (President)

Danny Baker Hello, my name is Danny Adrian Baker a candidate for the office of president of IBM Ring 362. I have been a student/teacher of magic for the past 34 years. I have mentored several ring members here in Maine and in Charleston South Carolina as past vice-president of IBM Ring 234 in Charleston South Carolina. I have taught Close-up magic for adult beginners and young people inspiring an interest and desire to learn more about this entertaining art form both privately and as part of Community education programs.

I have served many years in various community and civic groups.

I am Past Master of Queen City Grange #30 (A Farm Fraternal Organization) in Bangor.

I am Past Grand Knight of Pine Cone Council #114 Knights of Columbus. Under my guidance, this council received the prestigious STAR award.

My organizational skills come from many years in the service of our country in the United States Air Force. I am currently serving with the Department of Homeland Security /Transportation Security Administration as a "Lead Transportation Security Officer", helping to keep the skies safe for all air travelers. I lead a team of 5 highly motivated screeners each with the same goal in mind: "Provide World-Class Safety to our customers."

My marketing mentors include; Dave Dee, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Jim Snack, Eric Paul, Bruce Bray and Ken Scott.

My vision for Ring 362 is to increase our membership by at least 12 members in the next year by promoting the ring at each and every show I perform. If we as performers, entertainers and educators, are aware of the interest in magic in others, make time to talk with our audience after each performance. If an individual is genuinely interested give them your contact information and an IBM Flyer. Also try to get their info for follow up.

Each of us has Family, Friends and Business associates that probably have expressed this interest in magic but we haven't taken the time to foster and mentor that relationship.

The word for OUR ring 362 should be: "NOW!" No Opportunity Wasted!

We need members, old, new and to make all feel welcome. Keep each meeting interesting, informative and exciting to keep them coming back. A mentor program pairing new members with an older member should be a priority.

I ask for your support and your vote. Let us work together to build this ring.

Magically,

Danny Adrian Baker

Wes Booth (President)

Wes Booth Dear Ring 362 Members,

As we approach our election of officers for our second year, I take pen in hand to ask for your vote. Please take a moment now to review the past year with me and then look towards the future.

President Alan Drew and I are long time friends and during our many visits together we often discussed the possibility of forming a Maine IBM ring. In Fall of 2005, the right core group of people, some hard work, and tons of emails moved this idea closer to fruition. Finally in January of 2006, our petition for charter was signed by enough IBM members and we were on our way.

As your Vice President this year I: located and secured a venue for our first 2 meetings, located and secured a venue for our continued meetings and 2 crucial rehearsals, was a contributor to The Rapping Hand, have attended all meetings and performed to the theme, donated performances to both our Magical Review and our Cavalcade of Magic, served as talent coordinator for our Cavalcade of Magic.

I am delighted that my friend Danny Baker is also a candidate for the presidency. Ring 362 is truly in a "no lose" situation.

Looking forward, my 2007 platform targets 5 main goals:

  • Membership growth
  • Greater family involvement
  • Youth membership outreach
  • Greater outreach to our distance members
  • Higher community awareness

In closing, again, I am asking for your vote for Wes Booth for President. 2006 was a year of solid accomplishments; together in 2007, we'll take Ring 362 to even greater heights.

Yours in Magic and Family Fun,

Wes Booth

"The Family Fun Magician Kids Love Best!"

P.S. Please feel free to call/email to discuss any concerns for 2007 with me.

Thanks!
