Minutes of July 2009 Meeting
July 19, 2009


Ring Report for this meeting.

The July Meeting of I.B.M. Ring 362 was held at Dino's Pizza in Brewer, Maine, on July 19, 2009, at 3:00 pm. The theme of the meeting was Showstoppers. Please see the Ring Report for details. Dr. Wilson's Teaching Table on Wagers raised $10 for the Ring.

President Geoffrey Miller called the meeting to order. He cited a set of simplified Rules of Order that have been made available as a PDF on the Ring's web site, which were adopted as the Rules of Order for the meeting.

The agenda for the meeting had been made available in advance, and the President called for the adoption of the agenda, which was approved without amendment.

The minutes for the June meeting were approved without amendment.

Treasurer Randy Von Smith presented the Treasurer's Report. The bank balance was $2,075.85 and there was $375.00 in petty cash for a total of $2,450.85. Members voted to approve the Treasurer's Report.

In Old Business, the President called for new meeting themes and Teaching Tables for 2009. The theme for the November meeting will be Turkeys. Gary Jewell suggested Teach a Trick for the January meeting, and offered to serve as Theme Leader.

The September 20 meeting will be the Nate Leipzig Close-up Contest with Geoffrey Miller as the Contest Official. This meeting will take place at Thistles Restaurant in Bangor. The time of the contest has been moved to 4:00 pm. Ring members will have access to the restaurant after 2:00 pm.

There was a discussion of having the Max Malini Parlor Magic Contest on October 18 at All Souls Congregational Church. Danny Baker, Brother Don Paul, Randy Von Smith, and Dr. Wilson will not be able to attend. No one was available as Contest Offical. After a brief discussion, members voted not to hold the Max Malini Parlor Magic Contest in 2009.

In Old Business, Dr. Wilson reported on the magic classes that are part of Summer Festival of the Arts (SFOA). Each of the 24 students, and the two assistants, in the class received Joshua Jay's Magic - The Complete Course (book and DVD), as well as the DVD produced by Brian Rodgers featuring Ring member performances from the March 2009 and April 2009 Ring meetings. The total cost of the books and DVDs was $260 + $135 or $395. The Ring had budgeted $100 for SFOA magic class. The Board voted to compensate Dr. Wilson the full amount for the Joshua Jay books and Ring DVDs. Dr. Wilson reminded members of the Finale Performance, scheduled for Saturday, July 25, at MDI High School.

In Old Business, Geoffrey Miller called for applicants for the Nate Leipzig Parlor Magic Contest. Brother Don Paul and Dr. Wilson said that they would compete.

In New Business, the President reported that he had decided not to appoint a Nominating Committee. Candidates for Ring office in 2010 will be nominated by petition, with the signatures of three members being required for nomination. All current Board members submitted petitions for nomination to the Secretary. The nominees are: Geoffrey Miller (President), Gary Jewell (Vice President), Paul Szauter (Secretary), Randy Von Smith (Treasurer) and Aubrey Smith (Sergeant At Arms). Any other Ring member interested in running for office should submit a nomination petition to the Secretary by October 1.

With no further business, a motion was made to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
